Giữa những thao thức về hướng đi của Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam trong thời đại hôm nay, có lẽ điều đáng quý nhất không chỉ nằm ở những tuyên ngôn lớn, những diễn đàn rộng, hay những lý thuyết giáo dục cao xa. Điều đáng quý hơn là những mô hình cụ thể có khả năng chạm vào đời sống thật của tuổi trẻ, nâng đỡ các em trong những bước ngoặt quan trọng, và nuôi dưỡng nơi các em lý tưởng sống đẹp, sống lành, sống có trách nhiệm.

Trong ý nghĩa đó, Học Bổng Gia Đình Phật Tử Kim Quang — Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship không đơn thuần là một chương trình hỗ trợ tài chánh. Đây là một hướng nhìn giáo dục, một tâm nguyện phụng sự, và cũng là một cách cụ thể hóa lý tưởng Bi–Trí–Dũng trong đời sống của người đoàn sinh GĐPT tại Hoa Kỳ.

Cách đây đúng hai mươi năm, vào năm 2006, khi chúng tôi còn đảm trách vai trò Liên Đoàn Trưởng GĐPT Kim Quang, với một chút kinh nghiệm trong ngành giáo dục và thao thức cải tiến sinh hoạt, chúng tôi cùng quý anh chị đã đưa vào đơn vị một số chương trình nhằm hỗ trợ các em đoàn sinh phát triển toàn diện hơn. Trong đó có chương trình Big Brothers Big Sisters — anh chị đỡ đầu; Bridge Tutoring Program — chương trình dạy kèm sau giờ học; và Kim Quang Scholarship — Học Bổng GĐPT Kim Quang.

Nhìn lại, những chương trình ấy không phải chỉ là sinh hoạt phụ trợ. Đó là những nỗ lực đưa tinh thần giáo dục Phật giáo đi vào đời sống cụ thể: giúp các em có người đồng hành, có nơi nương tựa, có sự khích lệ, và có thêm niềm tin để bước tới.

Thuở ban đầu, học bổng còn rất khiêm tốn: chỉ có hai suất, mỗi suất $500. Nhưng nhờ sự tiếp nối của nhiều thế hệ, cùng tấm lòng của quý phụ huynh, huynh trưởng, mạnh thường quân và cộng đồng, hạt giống nhỏ ấy đã lớn dần theo năm tháng. Đến năm nay, GĐPT Kim Quang sẽ trao 4 học bổng, mỗi học bổng trị giá $1,000.

Dẫu con số ấy có thể chưa lớn giữa đời sống kinh tế nhiều biến động hôm nay, nhưng ý nghĩa tinh thần của nó thì sâu xa. Bởi đôi khi điều người trẻ cần không chỉ là một khoản tài chánh, mà còn là cảm giác được nhìn thấy, được tin tưởng, được khích lệ, và được một mái nhà Lam âm thầm nâng đỡ trong bước chuyển quan trọng của cuộc đời.

Hai sinh viên đầu tiên nhận Học Bổng GĐPT Kim Quang là Lê Văn Hải và Nguyễn Thị Yến. Hai mươi năm sau nhìn lại, chúng ta có thêm niềm tin rằng một sự khích lệ đúng lúc có thể góp phần nuôi dưỡng cả một đời sống đẹp.

Hải hiện nay là Phó Giáo sư, kiêm Giám đốc Chương trình Đào tạo Chuyên sâu về Cột sống trong ngành Phẫu thuật Cột sống Chỉnh hình, Khoa Phẫu thuật Chỉnh hình tại UC Davis Medical Center. Trong đời sống nghề nghiệp, Hải là một người mạnh mẽ, kỷ luật, khiêm tốn và tận tụy. Có thể nói, Huynh trưởng Lê Văn Hải là một người “văn võ song toàn” trong môi trường y khoa, một hình ảnh rất đẹp của người trẻ trưởng thành từ GĐPT: có học vấn, có bản lĩnh, có chuyên môn, nhưng vẫn giữ được tinh thần phụng sự.

Yến hiện đang hành nghề Dược sĩ tại quận hạt Sacramento. Cả hai em đều đã lập gia đình, có con, và điều đáng trân quý hơn nữa là vẫn tiếp tục sinh hoạt với Gia Đình Phật Tử cùng các con của mình. Đây chính là một hình ảnh tiếp nối rất đẹp: từ đoàn sinh nhận học bổng ngày nào, nay trở thành phụ huynh, huynh trưởng, người nâng đỡ và trao truyền lại tinh thần Lam cho thế hệ sau.

Còn năm nay, Hội đồng Tuyển chọn Học Bổng Gia Đình Phật Tử Kim Quang vừa công bố có 4 em được nhận học bổng Kim Quang năm nay, trong đó có đứa con trai út của chính mình. Một vòng tròn viên dung, xin chúc mừng các em sau đây:

1. Nguyễn Sanh Bối Chân, Pleasant Grove High School; sẽ học trường Cosumnes River College — Civil Engineering
2. Nguyễn Edward, Franklin High School, sẽ học trường UC Los Angeles — Pre Data Theory
3. Nguyễn Tâm Trí Richard, Franklin High School, sẽ học trường Elmira College and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine — Biology, DO Program
4. Bạch Thanh Kiệt, Sheldon High School, sẽ học trường UC Irvine — Biology

Nói như vậy để thấy rằng giá trị sâu xa của học bổng không dừng lại ở việc giúp các em bước vào đại học. Học bổng còn là một lời nhắn gửi: con đường học vấn cần được soi sáng bằng lý tưởng; thành công cá nhân cần được đặt trong tương quan với gia đình, cộng đồng và xã hội; và tri thức chỉ thật sự có ý nghĩa khi được nuôi dưỡng bởi lòng biết ơn, trách nhiệm và phụng sự.

Từ ngày đầu cho đến hôm nay, mục đích của Học Bổng GĐPT Kim Quang vẫn không thay đổi. Học bổng này nhằm khích lệ tinh thần và hỗ trợ một phần tài chánh cho những đoàn sinh có hiểu biết căn bản về GĐPT, có lý tưởng phục vụ gia đình, học đường và xã hội.

Trong tinh thần GĐPT, chúng tôi tin rằng hạnh phúc và an lạc của mỗi cá nhân, gia đình và xã hội tùy thuộc rất nhiều vào nền tảng giáo lý căn bản của Đạo Phật: Từ bi và Trí tuệ. Một xã hội lành mạnh cần những con người biết sống có lý tưởng, có trách nhiệm, có khả năng thương yêu, hiểu biết và phụng sự cho lợi ích nhân sinh.

Những nguyên tắc ấy chính là kim chỉ nam của tổ chức Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam. Qua nhiều thế hệ, các em đoàn sinh được nuôi dưỡng trong tinh thần Bi–Trí–Dũng: biết thương người, biết học hỏi, biết can đảm sống đúng với điều lành; biết phát triển bản thân mà không quên cộng đồng; biết thành tựu trong đời mà vẫn giữ được gốc rễ tâm linh và văn hóa của mình.

Trong bối cảnh thanh thiếu niên Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ đang chịu nhiều áp lực từ học tập, xã hội, mạng lưới truyền thông và sự phân tán căn tính văn hóa, một đơn vị GĐPT biết đặt trọng tâm vào giáo dục, khuyến học và đồng hành với con đường đại học của đoàn sinh là một dấu hiệu rất đáng trân trọng. Bởi sâu xa hơn, đây không chỉ là chuyện “trao học bổng”, mà là một cách nói với thế hệ trẻ rằng: tổ chức vẫn nhìn thấy những cố gắng âm thầm của các em, vẫn tin vào khả năng trưởng thành của các em, và vẫn muốn cùng các em đi tiếp trên hành trình xây dựng nhân cách.

Điều đẹp nhất nơi mô hình này là sự kết hợp giữa đạo và đời một cách tự nhiên. Tiêu chuẩn học bổng vừa nhìn vào thành tích học tập, vừa gắn liền với quá trình sinh hoạt lâu dài trong GĐPT. Điều đó phản ánh một nhận thức sâu sắc về giáo dục Phật giáo: không đào tạo con người chỉ để thành công ngoài xã hội, mà còn để biết sống có trách nhiệm, biết phụng sự, biết giữ gìn căn tính văn hóa-tâm linh giữa một môi trường đa văn hóa nơi hải ngoại.

Trong nhiều năm, chúng ta thường đặt câu hỏi: GĐPT có thể mang lại điều gì cụ thể cho tuổi trẻ hôm nay? Có lẽ một phần câu trả lời nằm ở chính những mô hình như thế này. Khi một tổ chức biết tạo điều kiện cho đoàn sinh bước vào đại học với sự nâng đỡ tinh thần lẫn vật chất, tổ chức ấy đã bước ra khỏi phạm vi của một đoàn thể sinh hoạt cuối tuần để trở thành một cộng đồng giáo dục đúng nghĩa. Ở đó, tình Lam không dừng lại nơi sân chùa, lớp học Phật pháp hay những ngày trại họp bạn, mà tiếp tục hiện diện trong những bước ngoặt quan trọng của đời người.

Hơn nữa, một học bổng mang tên Kim Quang cũng gợi lên một ý nghĩa biểu tượng rất đẹp. “Kim Quang” không chỉ là ánh sáng của tri thức, mà còn là ánh sáng của chánh niệm, đạo hạnh và lý tưởng phụng sự. Nếu được nuôi dưỡng đúng hướng, những đoàn sinh hôm nay rồi sẽ trở thành bác sĩ, dược sĩ, kỹ sư, giáo sư, chuyên gia, nhà hoạt động xã hội, hay những người công dân hữu ích trong nhiều lĩnh vực. Nhưng điều quan trọng hơn, các em có thể trở thành những con người tử tế, biết quay về với cội nguồn, biết sống có nhân cách, và biết đem tinh thần từ bi-trí tuệ vào đời sống cộng đồng.

Vì vậy, Học Bổng GĐPT Kim Quang không chỉ là một phần thưởng học tập, mà còn là một lời nhắc nhở đẹp: hãy tiếp tục đem ánh sáng của hiểu biết và tình thương vào đời sống. Hãy học giỏi, sống lành, phụng sự gia đình, cộng đồng và xã hội bằng tất cả trái tim của người con Phật.

Điều Kiện Dự Tuyển

Ứng viên cần hội đủ các điều kiện sau:

1. Là học sinh lớp 12 niên khóa 2025–2026 và sẽ tốt nghiệp trung học vào tháng 6 năm 2026.
2. Có gốc Việt Nam hoặc tối thiểu 50% gốc Á Châu.
3. Đang thường xuyên sinh hoạt với GĐPT tại Hoa Kỳ, với ít nhất 2 năm thâm niên.
4. Sẽ ghi danh học tại một trường cao đẳng cộng đồng hoặc đại học vào mùa học kế tiếp.

Hồ Sơ Gồm Có

1. Đơn xin học bổng được điền đầy đủ.
2. Một bài luận ngắn về bản thân hoặc bài tiểu luận khoảng 500 chữ theo câu hỏi trong đơn.
3. Phiếu điểm trung học, với GPA tối thiểu 3.3.
4. Ít nhất một thư giới thiệu.

Tiêu Chuẩn Tuyển Chọn

Hội đồng xét học bổng sẽ căn cứ trên các yếu tố sau:

1. Khả năng và phẩm chất cá nhân, như sự trưởng thành, động cơ học tập và khả năng thành đạt.
2. Sự hiểu biết về mục đích, lý tưởng và đường hướng của tổ chức GĐPT và Phật giáo.
3. Tinh thần đóng góp cho cộng đồng.
4. Thành tích học tập và tiềm năng phát triển trong tương lai.

Học Bổng GĐPT Kim Quang là một hạt giống nhỏ được gieo xuống từ hai mươi năm trước. Hôm nay, hạt giống ấy đã và đang nở hoa trong đời sống của nhiều thế hệ đoàn sinh. Một học bổng có thể không lớn về giá trị vật chất, nhưng đôi khi lại trở thành một dấu ấn tinh thần rất sâu trong ký ức của một người trẻ. Nhiều năm sau, điều còn ở lại không phải chỉ là vài trăm hay vài ngàn đô-la hỗ trợ, mà là cảm giác mình đã từng được một mái nhà Lam tin tưởng, nâng đỡ và trao gửi hy vọng.

Muốn giữ tuổi trẻ ở lại với tổ chức, chỉ tình cảm thôi chưa đủ. Tuổi trẻ hôm nay cần nhìn thấy giá trị thực tiễn của môi trường mình đang gắn bó. Các em cần cảm nhận rằng GĐPT không đứng ngoài hành trình trưởng thành của mình, mà thật sự đồng hành cùng mình trong học tập, nhân cách, lý tưởng và tương lai.

Xin được tri ân tất cả quý anh chị, quý phụ huynh, mạnh thường quân và các em đoàn sinh đã cùng nhau gìn giữ, nuôi dưỡng và tiếp nối tâm nguyện giáo dục này.

Có lẽ chính từ những điều nhỏ bé nhưng chân thành như thế, sinh mệnh của GĐPT sẽ tiếp tục được gìn giữ và nối dài trong lòng các thế hệ mai sau.

Vì tuổi trẻ hôm nay là tương lai của đạo pháp, dân tộc và nhân loại ngày mai.

Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship 
– A Circle of Wholeness and Harmony

Amid many reflections on the direction of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association in our time, perhaps what is most precious is not found only in grand declarations, large forums, or lofty educational theories. What is even more valuable are concrete models that can touch the real lives of young people, support them at important turning points, and nurture within them the ideal of living beautifully, living wholesomely, and living responsibly.

In that spirit, the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship is not merely a financial assistance program. It is a vision of education, a vow of service, and a concrete expression of the ideal of Compassion–Wisdom–Courage in the life of a Buddhist youth member in the United States.

Exactly twenty years ago, in 2006, when I was serving as Liên Đoàn Trưởng of GĐPT Kim Quang, with some experience in education and a sincere aspiration to improve our youth programs, together with our brothers and sisters, we introduced several initiatives to help our young members develop more fully. Among them were Big Brothers Big Sisters, a mentoring program; Bridge Tutoring Program, an after-school tutoring program; and Kim Quang Scholarship, the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship.

Looking back, these programs were not simply supplementary activities. They were efforts to bring the spirit of Buddhist education into concrete life: helping our young people have companions, a place of support, encouragement, and renewed confidence to move forward.

In the beginning, the scholarship was very modest: only two awards, each worth $500. But through the continuation of many generations, and through the generosity of parents, youth leaders, benefactors, and the community, that small seed has grown over the years. This year, GĐPT Kim Quang will award four scholarships, each valued at $1,000.

Although that amount may not seem large amid today’s economic challenges, its spiritual meaning is profound. Sometimes what young people need is not only financial assistance, but also the feeling of being seen, trusted, encouraged, and quietly supported by their Lam family during an important transition in life.

The first two students to receive the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship were Hai Le and Yen Nguyen. Looking back twenty years later, we have even more faith that timely encouragement can help nurture an entire beautiful life.

Hai is now an Associate Professor and Spine Fellowship Program Director in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, at UC Davis Medical Center. In his professional life, Hai is strong, disciplined, humble, and devoted. One could say that Huynh trưởng Hai Le is “both scholarly and skillful” in the medical setting—a beautiful image of a young person who grew up in GĐPT: educated, resilient, professionally accomplished, and still grounded in the spirit of service.

Yen is now practicing as a pharmacist in Sacramento County. Both have families and children of their own, and what is even more precious is that they continue to participate in Gia Đình Phật Tử with their children. This is a beautiful image of continuity: former scholarship recipients have now become parents, youth leaders, and those who help support and transmit the Lam spirit to the next generation.

This year, the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship Selection Committee has announced four recipients of the Kim Quang Scholarship, including my own youngest son. It is a complete and meaningful circle. Congratulations to the following students:

All of this reminds us that the deeper value of the scholarship does not stop at helping students enter college. The scholarship is also a message: the path of education must be illuminated by ideals; personal success must be placed in relationship with family, community, and society; and knowledge is truly meaningful only when nourished by gratitude, responsibility, and service.

From the beginning until today, the purpose of the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship has remained unchanged. This scholarship is meant to encourage and provide some financial support to youth members who have a basic understanding of GĐPT and who carry an ideal of service to family, school, and society.

In the spirit of GĐPT, we believe that the happiness and well-being of each individual, family, and society depend greatly on the foundational teachings of Buddhism: compassion and wisdom. A wholesome society needs people who live with ideals, responsibility, love, understanding, and a spirit of service for the benefit of humanity.

These principles are the guiding compass of the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association. Across generations, our youth members have been nurtured in the spirit of Compassion–Wisdom–Courage: learning to love others, to continue learning, to have the courage to live according to what is good; to develop themselves without forgetting the community; to succeed in life while still preserving their spiritual and cultural roots.

In the context of Vietnamese youth in the United States, who face many pressures from school, society, media networks, and the fragmentation of cultural identity, a GĐPT unit that places emphasis on education, scholarship, and accompanying its youth on the path to college is a deeply meaningful sign. More profoundly, this is not merely a matter of “awarding scholarships.” It is a way of telling the younger generation: the organization still sees your quiet efforts, still believes in your capacity to grow, and still wants to walk with you on the path of character formation.

The most beautiful aspect of this model is its natural integration of Dharma and life. The scholarship criteria look not only at academic achievement, but also at long-term participation in GĐPT. This reflects a deep understanding of Buddhist education: it does not train people merely to succeed in society, but also to live responsibly, to serve, and to preserve their cultural and spiritual identity within a multicultural environment overseas.

For many years, we have often asked: What can GĐPT concretely offer young people today? Perhaps part of the answer lies in models such as this. When an organization creates conditions for its youth members to enter college with both spiritual and material support, that organization moves beyond the role of a weekend youth group and becomes a true educational community. There, Lam affection does not end at the temple courtyard, Dharma class, or youth camp, but continues to be present at important turning points in a person’s life.

Furthermore, a scholarship bearing the name Kim Quang carries a beautiful symbolic meaning. “Kim Quang” is not only the light of knowledge, but also the light of mindfulness, virtue, and the ideal of service. If properly nurtured, today’s youth members may one day become doctors, pharmacists, engineers, professors, specialists, social advocates, or contributing citizens in many fields. More importantly, they can become kind human beings who remember their roots, live with character, and bring the spirit of compassion and wisdom into community life.

Therefore, the Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship is not only an academic award, but also a gentle reminder: continue to bring the light of understanding and love into life. Study well, live wholesomely, and serve your family, community, and society with the whole heart of a child of the Buddha.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a current high school senior in the 2025–2026 academic year and graduating in June 2026.
2. Be of Vietnamese heritage or at least 50% Asian heritage.
3. Be an active member of GĐPT in the United States, with at least two years of membership.
4. Plan to enroll in a community college or university in the upcoming academic term.

Application Materials

1. A completed scholarship application form.
2. A short personal essay or an approximately 500-word essay responding to the prompt in the application.
3. A high school transcript, with a minimum GPA of 3.3.
4. At least one letter of recommendation.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship committee will consider the following factors:

1. Personal qualities and abilities, such as maturity, motivation, and potential for achievement.
2. Understanding of the purpose, ideals, and direction of GĐPT and Buddhism.
3. Commitment to community service.
4. Academic achievement and future potential.

The Kim Quang Buddhist Youth Scholarship is a small seed planted twenty years ago. Today, that seed has blossomed and continues to blossom in the lives of many generations of youth members. A scholarship may not be large in monetary value, but sometimes it becomes a deep spiritual imprint in the memory of a young person. Many years later, what remains is not only a few hundred or a few thousand dollars of support, but the feeling that one was once trusted, supported, and entrusted with hope by a Lam family.

To keep young people connected to the organization, affection alone is not enough. Young people today need to see the practical value of the environment to which they belong. They need to feel that GĐPT does not stand outside their journey of growth, but truly accompanies them in education, character formation, ideals, and future aspirations.

With deep gratitude, we thank all brothers and sisters, parents, benefactors, and youth members who have helped preserve, nourish, and continue this educational aspiration.

Perhaps it is from small but sincere efforts like this that the life of GĐPT will continue to be preserved and extended in the hearts of future generations.

For the youth of today are the future of the Dharma, the Vietnamese people, and humanity tomorrow.
