Dear Sir:

The world grows increasingly aware of the massive fish kill blighting Vietnam’s central coast—a crisis Formosa has caused. It is time for you to acknowledge that your steel plant at Ha Tinh is responsible; issue an apology to the Vietnamese people; and begin a clean up at once.

Formosa’s negligence has destroyed hundreds of tons of sea life, sickened people and robbed them of their livelihood. 

In the past, you might have had the option to ignore a letter like mine. No longer. The companies you do business with cannot afford the negative publicity of associating with you. Through social networks and global media, consumers and stakeholders will spread images of the damage Formosa has done and demand justice.

I urge you to take responsibility. Publicly acknowledge that your steel plant at Ha Tinh has caused the damage. Issue an apology to the Vietnamese people, and immediately begin a clean up of the affected beaches and water.

BP. Union Carbide. Chisso. Each of these corporations was supremely confident of its financial security…until it caused an environmental disaster. 

Formosa cannot afford to ignore the damage it has done to Vietnam. The world now knows about the untreated wastewater dumped into the ocean by your steel factory at Ha Tinh. People everywhere are demanding justice for the thousands of tourist workers and fishermen out of work, and the many patients hospitalized for eating tainted fish. The images of the beaches and waters swarming with dead, bloated sea life should sicken anyone with a conscience.

The pressure upon Formosa will only continue to grow, as consumers and stakeholders unite and speak out, bound by their common humanity.

Please do the right thing, and do it now. Acknowledge responsibility. Apologize to the people of Vietnam. Begin the clean up immediately.
