The Historiographical Method
of the Late GĐPT Leader Nguyên Thành Lê Văn Hoàng
and the Question of Writing the History
of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam

For any organization that has passed through many generations, history is always the foundation by which it recognizes itself. Yet the writing of history has never been merely a matter of collecting documents or recording events. Between the pages of history that remain and the memories that gradually fade, the writer must always face a difficult question: how can the past be recounted truthfully while still helping the present generation understand the meaning of what their predecessors labored to build? For this reason, the value of a historical work lies not only in the body of materials it gathers, but also in the historiographical method the author chooses in order to read, interpret, and transform the past into historical awareness for the present.

Through the study The Development of GĐPTVN Through Its Historical Stages by GĐPT Leader Nguyên Thành Lê Văn Hoàng*, we can clearly see that what deserves attention is not only the events being presented, but also the way the author approaches history, organizes sources, analyzes historical processes, and explains the movement of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam within the larger currents of Buddhism and the Vietnamese nation. From this perspective, the present essay seeks to examine the author’s historiographical method and, at the same time, to offer a few reflections for the work of writing the history of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam in the present and future.

The historiographical method of Trưởng Nguyên Thành is neither a commemorative mode of historical writing nor a chronological account intended to embellish the past. From the very opening lines, the author raises a fundamental question that every historical work must confront: What is the purpose of writing history?

If history stops at recounting merit, preserving names, lulling itself within the glory of former days, or using the past to justify the stagnation of the present, then history loses its illuminating function and becomes a lifeless archive. From that point of departure, the author establishes a serious historical attitude: to view history through right understanding; to approach the past with a critical yet non-negating spirit; to analyze without falling into extremism; to synthesize without oversimplification; and thereby to discern the laws of organizational development and transform historical experience into a source of orientation for the future.

The most distinctive feature of the author’s historiographical method is that he never separates Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam from the larger historical whole of Buddhism and the Vietnamese people. The birth and development of the organization are not explained as the result of a few exceptional individuals or a sequence of accidental events, but rather as the convergence of many historical conditions: the Buddhist revival movement of the early twentieth century, the need to educate youth amid national upheaval, the transformation of Vietnamese society before modern currents, and, especially, the aspiration to form a young generation of lay Buddhists who would be both imbued with the Dharma and capable of serving society. By placing the organization within such broad layers of context, the history of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam is no longer merely the history of a separate association; it becomes an organic part of the modern historical development of Vietnamese Buddhism.

This is precisely one of the valuable characteristics of contemporary historiographical method. History cannot be explained only by itself; it must be situated within a network of relations involving religion, culture, education, politics, society, and human beings. An organization can only be properly understood when viewed within the full environment that gave rise to it. For this reason, the study avoids two common tendencies in internal organizational history: either absolutizing the role of the organization as an isolated entity, or reducing every development to the accomplishments of a few individuals.

In terms of methodology, the author demonstrates a commendable historical consciousness when he acknowledges the relative nature of historical periodization. He does not regard historical stages as sealed compartments, nor does he treat the division of periods as an absolute truth. For Trưởng Nguyên Thành, periodization is only a cognitive instrument, a way to help readers see more clearly the developmental patterns of a process that is, by its very nature, continuous and constantly in motion. This awareness allows the work to rise above traditional chronicle-writing and move closer to the spirit of contemporary historiography, in which explanation is no less important than the recording of events, and the structure of history is no less important than historical facts themselves.

Another distinctive feature is the author’s ability to combine historical sources with historical interpretation. Many historical works stop at the collection of materials, while many essays of commentary lack an evidentiary foundation. Trưởng Nguyên Thành Lê Văn Hoàng avoids both extremes. He begins with primary materials: internal regulations, statutes, congresses, resolutions, personnel records, and organizational milestones. Yet each datum is placed within a chain of analysis intended to answer more essential questions: What does this event reveal about the needs of its time, the level of organizational development, the capacity for leadership, and the ability of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam to adapt before the upheavals of history? It is precisely this combination of evidence and interpretive thought that turns history into a living process rather than a dry statistical table.

It may be said that the author’s historiographical method operates on three levels. The first is documentation and scholarly compilation, with respect for evidence and for the authenticity of sources. The second is interpretation, where events are placed within causal relationships and within concrete historical and social contexts. The third is reflection, where history becomes an object of thought regarding the present and the future. It is this third level that gives the text its distinctive value. History here does not merely answer the question, “What happened?” It also raises the questions, “Why did it happen?” and “What meaning does it still hold for us today?”

Within the framework of contemporary historiography, this may be understood as a form of reflective historiography joined with organizational history. The writer does not stand outside the object of study as a cold observer, yet neither does he dissolve himself into it through pure emotion. He is both an insider and one who strives to maintain the necessary distance of a researcher. It is this balance that allows the text to retain its scholarly character without losing the living breath of a GĐPT Leader who is deeply concerned with the destiny of the organization.

The great value of the work lies in the fact that the author does not equate loyalty to the past with the praise of the past. He is loyal by questioning the past, by illuminating both the achievements and the limitations of each stage, and from there clarifying the laws of organizational development. Under his pen, the past is not a place in which to take shelter in pride; it is a foundation upon which to build the future. This is also one of the important principles of modern historiography: history has true value only when it helps human beings understand the present and act responsibly toward the future.

From that historiographical method, one may draw an orientation for the work of writing the history of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam today and tomorrow. The writer of history must first be faithful to evidence, yet must not become enslaved to data. One must possess tình Lam, the affection and spiritual kinship of the Blue-shirt family, yet must not allow sentiment to obscure the truth. One must have an educational and service-oriented standpoint, yet must not turn history into an instrument of any tendency or faction. One must know how to place the organization within the flow of Buddhist history and national history, rather than viewing it as an isolated entity. Most importantly, one must always regard history as a process of dialogue between past and present, so that each generation may find within it its own identity, understand its responsibility, and determine the path of continuation for the generations to come.

In general terms, the historiographical method of Trưởng Nguyên Thành Lê Văn Hoàng not only suggests a way of writing history; it also suggests an attitude toward history. It is the attitude of one who respects truth, who remains humble before evidence, who dialogues with the past in a spirit of reflection, and who directs the entire work of historical writing toward the education of human beings. It is precisely at this point that the work moves beyond the scope of an ordinary historical essay and becomes a methodological suggestion of lasting value for those who will continue to write the history of Gia Đình Phật Tử Việt Nam in the decades to come.

Tâm Quảng Nhuận: Đọc Lại Một Huấn Thị An Cư: Từ Sự Tồn Tại Của Giáo Hội Đến Sự Tồn Tại Của Chánh Pháp

Reading Again an Instruction for the Rains Retreat:
From the Existence of the Sangha to the Existence of the Dharma

History often bears within itself a paradox. What is spoken of most loudly in an age is not necessarily what matters most to that age. We may spend decades debating organizational structures, legitimacy, historical decisions, or political events. Yet when the dust of time has settled, what remains in the collective memory may not be those debates themselves, but deeper questions concerning original vows, the reason for existence, and what has enabled a tradition to pass through the storms of history and continue to endure.

It is perhaps in this sense that, during Vesak of Buddhist Era 2565, when Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ chose to read again the Instruction for the Rains Retreat by the Fourth Supreme Patriarch, Elder Most Venerable Thích Huyền Quang, the act was not merely one of remembrance. A text written many years earlier was suddenly recalled in the midst of that Vesak season, not simply to evoke a time already past, but as a profound and quiet reminder.

Vietnamese Buddhism has passed through nearly a century of great upheaval. From the Buddhist movement of 1963, the establishment of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam in 1964, the turbulent transformations after 1975, to the changing conditions of religious life in the age of globalization, much has changed. Structures may differ. Circumstances may differ. Generations of leaders have come and gone. Even debates that once shook an era have gradually receded into the past. Yet amid all these changes, a fundamental question remains as timely as ever: what truly constitutes the existence of Buddhism?

At first glance, many of us may think it is the Sangha. Others may say it is temples, scriptures, or the community of believers. But if we read carefully the Instruction for the Rains Retreat of Supreme Patriarch Huyền Quang, we recognize that his emphasis lies elsewhere. Not in organization, but in the Sangha. Not in power, but in discipline. Not in the expansion of influence, but in the depth of the life of practice.

This was not accidental.

In Buddhist history, whenever great crises arose, spiritual leaders often did not begin from the outside, but returned to the inner source. After each period of persecution in India, China, or Vietnam, what the elders first sought was not the construction of additional institutions, but the restoration of the Sangha. They understood that temples could be destroyed, scriptures could be scattered, organizations could be dissolved; yet if the Sangha still upheld morality, concentration, and wisdom, then the Dharma still had the possibility of renewal.

Seen from this perspective, the Instruction for the Rains Retreat is not only an exhortation to practice. It is a historical insight.

The Fourth Supreme Patriarch, Elder Most Venerable Huyền Quang, belonged to a generation that had passed through war, imprisonment, house arrest, and profound changes in the life of the nation. He understood more clearly than most the fragility of institutions. For that reason, he did not place absolute trust in what belonged to form. His trust lay in the capacity of the Sangha to purify and restore itself. A Sangha may lose its social position. A community may be pushed to the margins of history. But if the monastic still preserves the quality of a true monastic, then the lamp of the Dharma will never be extinguished.

Here, the meaning of the Instruction extends beyond the bounds of the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam.

Many people often regard the Sangha as a historical entity. That is not wrong. Yet what gives the UBCV its meaning in history is not merely the fact that it existed as an organization, but the ideal that the organization sought to protect. That ideal was not religious power, nor was it competition among organizational models. It was the effort to preserve the independence of spiritual life before the pressures of the times.

For in the final analysis, every Sangha is only a means. The Dharma alone is the end.

When the late Elder Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ read again that Instruction, what he wished to remind us of, perhaps, was not the past of the Sangha but the responsibility of the present. A Sangha truly exists with meaning only when the values it seeks to protect remain alive. If those values are lost, then even if the organizational structure remains, the soul of the Sangha has already been diminished.

This becomes all the more worthy of reflection in Buddhist life today.

Never before have monastics possessed so many means for propagating the Dharma. Never before has information traveled so quickly. Yet never before has the inner life faced so many dangers of dispersion. A monk may be occupied with countless Buddhist affairs and no longer have sufficient time to sit quietly with himself. A temple may develop rapidly, while the depth of meditative life fails to keep pace with the expansion of physical facilities. An organization may become more dynamic, while the practice of each member grows increasingly thin.

That is the paradox of the age. And it is precisely why the Instruction for the Rains Retreat remains ever timely.

For lay Buddhists, this reminder is no less important. In the Buddhist tradition, the laity are not merely recipients of the Dharma; they are also those who help protect the conditions in which the Dharma may continue to exist. To support the Three Jewels is not only to build temples or make offerings. It is also to help preserve the spiritual life of the Sangha from being drawn into the conflicts of the secular world. This is a quiet responsibility, but an exceedingly important one.

And when we look toward the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, this meaning opens another dimension.

For the Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association, the Instruction also invites a thought worthy of contemplation. For nearly a century within the heart of Vietnamese Buddhism, the Association has formed many generations of young people who matured in the grey uniform. Yet the value of this organization does not lie in the number of its members or the scale of its activities. What matters more is its ability to keep open for younger generations a path of return—to the temple, to the Three Jewels, and to spiritual values that rise above the passing attractions of society.

In this sense, the Association both receives its nurture from the Sangha and belongs, in some measure, to the life of the Sangha. The flourishing or decline of the Dharma will inevitably be reflected in each generation of young Buddhists. Thus, the reminder concerning the Rains Retreat and the Pravarana is not a matter reserved for monastics alone. It is also a reminder for those who wear the grey uniform to understand that every educational endeavor must ultimately find its place within the larger current of the Dharma. When the source remains clear, the smaller streams continue to flow. When that source runs dry, no organizational skill or achievement in activity can compensate for the emptiness that follows.

This, too, may be what the Instruction for the Rains Retreat seeks to convey in another language.

In the end, reading this text again today, what awakens the deepest reflection is not a call to rally, nor a slogan meant to stir the spirit. It is a question.

After all the changes of history, after all the debates over organization, and after all the differences in views and positions, what must truly be preserved so that Buddhism may still remain Buddhism?

Perhaps the answer is not found in what we are debating, but in what the elders have quietly reminded us of for a very long time: that the existence of the Dharma begins first with the existence of an awakened life within each person.
