IT IS MORE THAN JUST POLICE BRUTALITY AND RACE IN THIS COUNTRY

This past week, two African-American men were shot and killed by white police in Louisiana and Minnesota. It spurred protests and debate over police brutality, and even guns, in our country. Yesterday, a black sniper intentionally killed five police officers and injured seven more. Clearly, his ill-will intended to kill white people, especially white officers. It was an act of revenge just because he was upset about recent police shootings. 

Revenge is an act of desperation- a calling for help and not revolutionary. It is an act of hatred and domestic terrorism. Violence fuels violence as if gasoline is poured into the fire. Violence is not a solution. There is no place for that in this already violent world. Buddha once said, "Only compassion conquers all hatred." Even Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party who was shot by the Chicago Police Department said, "We don't think you fight fire with fire best; we think you fight fire with water best." Yes, police brutality and profiling need to stop and so hatred and violence. 

Just take a deep breath, calm down and be proactive in our action to change things. All transformation starts from the within. I remembered as a teenager in the great nation- 'land of opportunity', I was profiled by the police. I first came to this country in 1991. A friend and I were profiled and put in the back of the cars of the police just because a white kid decided that "we- the Asian-looking guys, might be the one who threatened to hit him." We happened to be the ones who walked to Peter Pan Park in Lincoln, NE. It took the police a long time to verify what we said (via the translator of course since we didn't speak the language back then). We were finally released when that kid decided that we were not the guys. No apology or anything was given to us. Thus, police profiling and brutality need to be stop once and for all. 

My family and I transformed my frustration into action via volunteering in the Asian Center and doing good deeds for the community. We obtained the highest education level possible to give back and contribute to our society. We helped the newcomers and we built bridges rather than walls. We endeavor to spread mutual understanding and compassion rather than biases and hatred. 

The solution for the current issue is much more complicated because the problem is systematic and institutional. Perhaps, we should start with anti-poverty and anti-racism efforts, the justice system, educational reform (including Title I funding), prison reform, gun laws, reducing violence in games, fantasizing guns and gangs, and/or militarism within the American society (using the robot to bombed and killed the suspect is an example). But let’s first start with changes from within. We need to be open-minded, empathetic, and develop our willingness to change for the greater good from our current situations.

It is evident that we live in a democratic system which is a nation of laws. All of us citizens must abide by the laws of the country that we created and we must take great care of our obligations and responsibilities to make this great nation even stronger. 

We, as compassionate and patriotic Americans, need to find a revolution and that revolution must have the foundation of love, compassion, understanding, equality and peace.  With the heavy heart, I am praying for all the victims and police officers in Dallas and their families. Let's turn this grief into compassionate action for our family, community and society.

Our first Tết, Vietnamese New Year, without Mom--the Embodiment of Compassion

Tết or Vietnamese New Year is like the Americans’ version of New Year’s Day, Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving combined. This priceless festival usually lasts from at least three to seven days, and represents purity and renewal not only in the families and communities but also in the universe. Vietnamese New Year brings a message of thankfulness, rejuvenation, renewal, hope, and optimism.

This year, we celebrate without our beloved Mother, Ai Tran, who along with our Father, Long Bach, brought us to this freedom and compassionate country, the United States of America from the war-torn native tongue homeland, Vietnam. On June 18th, 1991, we immigrated to this country and settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, where our Mom worked in the cleaning garment business until she retired and moved to Sacramento, CA. She just passed away on September 22nd, 2015.

Thanks to our parents, especially our Mother, we have a special family tradition in our family during this time of year. As Buddhists, we come to the temple to pray for world peace, paying gratitude and well wishes to the elders in families, enjoy traditional food, the heavenly music, the joys and laughter. But more importantly, it is the time for the well wishes, doing charities, and praying for peace for our community and world peace. And our Mother ensured we do just that in this blessed season with joy, happiness, and loving-kindness (metta). Mother is the source of unconditional love, who provides comfort, security, and joy every day to all eight of us. I wrote this poem to honor her.

MOTHER LETTING GO OF HER HAIR -- LOVING HER FOREVER

Mother always lives her life the way it should be:

Caring, loving, with devotion and tolerance.

It is the embodiment of

Poetry,

Landscape,

Seascape,

Soundscape.

Mother's life is packed with a compassionate heart and mind.

Today, letting go of her hair, she lets go of all negativities;

The seed of Bodhi sprouts awakening, in homage to Buddha.

Oh! Mother, may you live so our lives undergo less suffering.

Even though we understand impermanence,

mother's shore is beckoning

this human realm always, dreamable nonetheless unpredictable.

We wish to still have you, 

Mother! Even so thin and skinny you have turned out to be,

We wish to still have you, Mother, 

in order for us to understand the ups and downs of this human realm.

Let go of this hair – let go of this realm

with love and peace.

           Our mother was born on December 20, 1934 in Vinh Hoi Village, Phu My District, in the Binh Dinh Province, a beautifully romantic coastal province located in the central region of Vietnam. She was always soft spoken, gentle, patient, modest, and willing to make sacrifices. Our parents were married for a little over 60 years via pre-arranged marriage. Their love grew with time while they cared, nurtured, and passed on the beautiful culture, heritage, and humane values to every one of us. Our Mother, like all mothers, is the embodiment of compassion and of love.

            To us, our Mother is beyond wonderful. It seems impossible to fully describe how much my mother loved and cared for us. Her love is a sweet miracle. My mother is a pure stream, as shiny as a thousand stars, as peaceful as the sounds of bells and praying. She is a Bodhisattva, as vast as a rice field, as great as the taste of fresh air from our village. She is as great as the scent of herbs, as great as a Vietnamese lục bát poem. 

            "My dear Mother! We don’t have enough words to describe you! Your love is immense and it overwhelms our lives. How can we use the limit of language or the finite words to write about the infinite love of our mother?" 

            The day our mom passed, our hearts just broke and filled with sorrows. But we were in the realization of impermanence, and at ease when our own children began to understand the important concepts in Buddhist teachings. After nearly 24 hours of our Mother's passing, I went home and picked my sons up from the hospital. I was hungry and about to eat some food, when the thought of offering a bowl of food to our mom first before eating brought tears to my eyes. The tears just kept flowing down my cheeks. My wife comforted me, but the one who reminded me that this life is impermanent was our own 9-year-old son, Khang. He said, "It is normal, daddy. Everyone dies. Our grandmother died, you will die, mommy will die, and I will die, too. Don't be sad." Because life is impermanent, that is why our Mom and us are actively loving, living, and contributing more to this life. Our Mother lived a very beautiful life, and so was her passing. It was beautiful in the beginning, it was beautiful in the middle, and it was beautiful in the end. 

         Comes and goes as the moonlight always shines above our head

         Departing in peacefulness rhythms with the Buddha’s Name.

         (Đến đi trăng sáng trên đầu                       

         Thong dong tự tại nhiệm mầu Phật ngôn).

            We recognize that our Mother still lives in us, her children and grandchildren, as Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh said, "MOTHER, YOU CONTINUE WELL IN ME!" Our Mothers' hope, ambition, trust, love, and virtues will live on in her children and grandchildren. We will continue what Mom lived by her examples, speeches, and actions. So, Mom, please take your leisure journey to the realms of Amitabha Buddha.

       Mother is vast -- the realms of compassion

  Just the cloud flows over the mountain to escape its impermanence

       Amitabha Buddha is your native land

       (Mẹ mênh mông cõi từ bi

       Mây qua đỉnh núi thoát ly vô thường

       Di Đà đất Phật quê hương)

           Our dearest Mother! Dad, all of us and our families are paying our last gratitude and respect in this earthly realm. This holiday season, we are celebrating without your physical form, but you are here with us in the spirit. We will continue our tradition of living and working together to elevate many forms of suffering and pain. We are bringing mutual respect, understanding, and compassion. 

May all of us be safe. May all of us be well in a year filled with peace and happiness in our communities and in the world.

         Thật là nhẹ nhõm, sạch sẽ, và có cảm giác đẹp đẽ hơn. Đó là cảm giác của tôi khi được đi làm móng chân xong. Quý Chị yêu dấu của tôi cũng như một số nữ giới mà tôi hỏi, "Xin cho cảm giác của mình khi làm nail xong". Những câu trả lời đều có hàm ý của chị Út, đó là họ cảm thấy sạch sẽ, đúng mốt (trend), hợp thời trang, tự tin hơn, quý phái và sang trọng hơn mỗi khi làm móng tay chân. Bài viết này nhằm tìm hiểu thêm về thực trạng nghề làm nail tại Hoa Kỳ và chúng tôi đưa ra năm biện pháp làm giảm sự tác hại khi hành nghề nail.

            Có thể nói, thông thường người Ấn Độ có việc như làm chủ tiệm xăng, người Đại Hàn là chủ tiệm giặt ủi, còn người Việt Nam thì làm chủ tiệm nail hoặc làm nail.  Đa số những phụ nữ Việt Nam mới qua Hoa Kỳ đều chọn làm nghề nghiệp này vì tương đối dễ dàng kiếm tiền giúp đỡ gia đình mà không cần tiếng Anh nhiều. Có lẽ ai trong chúng ta, ít nhiều đều quen biết những người đã hoặc đang làm nail.   Có người trong chúng ta cũng có người thân mới qua Hoa Kỳ, đang hành nghề này, trong đó có nhiều người trẻ không thông thạo tiếng Anh. Theo tài liệu nghiên cứu của cô Quách và đồng nghiệp làm việc tại Northern California Cancer Center đã được phát hành trong Journal of community health vào năm 2008 *[2], ở tiểu Bang California có 300,000 người làm thợ nail, trong đó có khoảng 59-80% là người phụ nữ Việt Nam (chưa kể đàn ông?).

            Theo bài nghiên cứu này, họ phỏng vấn 201 nhân viên Việt Nam làm móng tay trong 74 tiệm. Những người phụ nữ Việt Nam phải đối mặt với những rào cản ngôn ngữ, văn hóa và xã hội để làm việc mặc cho sự an toàn và sức khỏe nguy hại của chính mình. Đa số những người làm thợ nail lo ngại về sức khỏe của mình khi tiếp xúc với hóa chất tại nơi làm việc.

            Vì lợi ích của nhiều người và có nhiều lần có người nhờ tôi nên viết về đề tài này, nên tôi trình bày những gì mình biết và trải nghiệm. Mặc dầu tôi cũng đã từng làm nail cho Mẹ, chỉ là cắt móng tay sơ sài vậy thôi, làm kiểu tài tử nên có lần tôi đã viết bài thơ dưới, khi chăm sóc móng tay của Mẹ. Bài thơ này được anh bạn Nguyên Quang phổ nhạc:

đôi tay gầy xanh xao

bao yêu thương thuở nào

đều dành cho con cháu

bao nỗi khổ niềm đau

          Mặc dù là vậy, nhưng làm sao tôi có thể viết về một cái nghề “khó mà dễ, dễ mà khó” này. Tôi quan niệm rằng, không ai có thể viết trung thực được nếu mình chưa bao giờ được trải nghiệm đi làm móng tay hoặc chân của mình.  Thế rồi, duyên cũng đến, tôi đi Florida để thăm người thân và chủ động đi tiệm nail để được làm ‘chân tay nước’, nhưng chỉ muốn được chăm sóc móng chân thôi vì tay cần phải phỏng vấn người làm thợ làm Nail.  Tiệm này tương đối khang trang và mới mẻ; Tiệm có tên là Amy's Nail 2. Đây là tiệm nail thứ 2 của gia đình, chồng đang làm một tiệm nail khác và vợ đang làm tiệm nail này. Khi vừa bước vào ấn tượng đầu tiên là mùi khó chịu của hóa chất mà tôi cảm thấy không quen và ngột ngạt. Nhưng thầm nghĩ đây là nồi cơm, tương lai và hy vọng của rất nhiều người Việt Nam trong và ngoài nước, nên tôi tôn trọng và khắc phục để được ngồi trải nghiệm làm móng chân hầu giúp số đông người làm nail bằng cách viết bài này.

          Tôi, vốn là nhà giáo dạy hóa học từ trường Trung học đến Đại học, nên tôi biết những hoá chất có tiềm năng độc hại này. Cô gái trẻ Jannet N., Tuổi 20, đang học college ở Tampa, FL, nở nụ cười trên môi khi tiếp tôi. Trong khi đó, chúng tôi trò chuyện và em Jannet đã tâm sự và chia sẻ nên tôi học hỏi nhiều điều về em. Em mới có 20 tuổi thôi và đã đi ‘làm nail’ rất nhuần nhuyễn và chuyên nghiệp.  Em bảo rằng em thích đi làm hơn là đi học vì học ‘khó vô’; Em vừa tâm sự và vừa bỏ một chất gì đó lên chân, vì không có thấy nhãn hiệu gì hết, nên tôi hỏi em là em biết những loại hoá chất này tên gì và có công hiệu như thế nào không, em lắc đầu không biết. Theo cái biết của tôi thì những hóa chất thường được sử dụng trong tiệm Nail bao gồm: Acetone, isopropyl alcohol (thuốc tẩy nước sơn móng), Acetonitrile (chất tháo keo dán móng giả), Ethyl methacrylate (nước làm móng giả), Formaldehyde (chất làm cứng móng), Methacrylic Acid (nước lót primer cho móng giả), Methyl Methacrylate (nước làm móng giả), Ortho-phenylphenol, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (thuốc khử trùng), Phthalates (nước sơn móng), Toluene (nước sơn móng, keo dán móng giả), Benzoyl peroxide (Bột làm móng tay giả), Ethyl cyanoacrylate (Keo dán móng tay), v.v…

          Tất cả những hóa chất này có thể xâm nhập vào cơ thể con người qua ba hình dạng chính như hít thở hóa chất, thấm qua đường da, hoặc bị lỡ nuốt hoá chất đó. Nhưng nặng nhất là người thợ nail vì phải làm nhiều giờ trong tiệm vì phải hít thở không khí không được trong lành đó. Những hóa chất này có thể gây ra các bệnh da, nhức đầu, choáng váng, nổi mề đay, phổi, nguy cơ ung thư vú v.v...; thông thường nhất là da nổi mụn; mắt, mũi, và cổ họng khó chịu; chóng mặt; và nhức đầu. Các hóa chất này có thể gây ra bệnh tình nặng hơn như dị ứng da, nhức đầu, bệnh phổi, nguy cơ ung thư vú v.v.. nếu làm và tiếp xúc hoá chất lâu năm.

          Làm nail tương đối có tiền nhanh. Thợ nail đa phần nhận lương bổng theo kiểu 60/40. Thợ được 60% còn chủ được 40%. Có người được bao lương hằng tháng, và lương bổng trung bình, tuỳ nơi tuỳ tiệm, có được khoảng $2500 - $4000 tháng, tương đương với lương giáo chức như chúng tôi thuở mới bắt đầu. Tuy nhiên trong số lương bổng này có khoảng một nửa  chỉ trả bằng tiền mặt và một nửa  trả bằng tiền check. Ngoài ra, người thợ được nhận tiền “T” hay tips riêng. Nói chung, sự chấp nhận rủi ro và trao đổi sức khỏe của mình để hành nghề nail là có thật. Lương bổng tương đối cao, nhưng sự chấp nhận rủi ro về sức khoẻ và cái nghề lương thiện này cần phải được tôn trọng và trân quý.  Trong giới làm nail, có một số là đấng mày râu, trong số đó chúng tôi phục những người đã vượt qua được cái ngã, sự cố chấp, và sự tự ái để tìm thấy sự trao đổi cao cả hơn.

          Tuy có những cái không hay trong nghề làm nail của người Việt mình, như hiện tượng phá giá của chủ tiệm nail, giành giật khách  hoặc thời gian rảnh rỗi, không có khách thì hơi ‘nhàn cư sanh bất thiện’, đôi khi nhiều chuyện, thị phi, cờ bạc, v.v… nhưng đa phần những người thợ nail làm cực nhọc, hy sinh và tận tụy để lo cho mình, cho gia đình và bà con thân bằng quyến thuộc.

           Cũng như bao nhiêu công nhân Việt Nam khác, thợ làm nail làm việc cần cù, chăm chỉ và khéo tay. Ở trong dịch vụ làm đẹp, họ cắt tỉa giũa móng tay móng chân. Thợ nail còn đang làm việc xoa bót những bàn tay, bàn chân của khách hàng. Họ làm cho khách hàng cảm thấy dễ chịu và đẹp thêm khi rời ‘văn phòng’ của mình. Họ còn thực tập những tính nết đáng quý trong đời như sự không phân biệt, ai họ cũng làm mà không từ chối. Họ kiên nhẫn lắng nghe những nỗi niềm, đôi khi là khó chịu và thiếu văn hóa, của khách hàng.

        Trở lại việc làm móng chân của tôi, qua đó tôi chứng nghiệm và biết được những điều khá thú vị.  Cô gái Jannet N., người cho phép chúng tôi dùng hình ảnh và những lời tâm sự, bảo rằng đối với cô nghề nail có thể là một công việc tạm thời hay là một sự nghiệp. Cô hỏi tôi có lời khuyên gì không khi phải gặp phải khách hàng khó tính, nhất là những người có mùi hôi như đang hút thuốc ‘bậy bạ’.  Tôi bảo là làm nail, em phải có khả năng đổi cách nhìn của mình, vì hãy xem chính em là một vị bác sỹ đang chăm sóc cho một người cần sự giúp đỡ của em; nếu ai đó khó chịu hay khó tính đi nữa, thì em hãy xem người khách đó là những bệnh nhân của chính em và họ đang cần sự giúp đỡ. Em hãy cố gắng giúp đỡ  tận tình, em hãy thực hành câu kinh: “Sáng cho người thêm niềm vui, chiều giúp người bớt khổ”. Em hãy làm việc bằng với sự tận tuỵ và yêu thương của mình.  Cô bé Jannet vui vẻ và chăm sóc cho móng chân của tôi, từ cắt tỉa, xoa bóp, paraffin wax, thoa lotion. Cô còn định cúi xuống mang tất (socks) lại, nhưng tôi đã từ chối vì mình có thể làm điều đó. Chúng tôi trả tiền $25 cho việc làm nail và thêm $15 tiền tip và ra về trong niềm hoan hỷ với nhau.

        Sau gần 45 phút, mùi hôi của hoá chất vẫn còn đó nhưng tôi đã quen rồi và không còn cảm thấy thấy khó chịu nữa. Tuy nhiên với một người dạy hoá học, tôi xin góp ý xây dựng các thợ nail cần phải đề phòng và bảo vệ sức khỏe cho chính mình. Sau đây là 5 biện pháp có thể giảm sự tác hại trong nghề làm nail:

1. Tạo môi trường có không khí trong lành – Giảm thiểu nguy cơ hít hoá chất

 ·   Bảo đảm cho tiệm hoặc nơi làm việc sạch sẽ

 ·   Ra ngoài tiệm, thở không khí trong lành sau mỗi 30 phút hoặc khi làm xong một khách hàng.

 ·    Cần phải có hệ thống có máy hút (ventilation) tốt và hệ thống hút khí gần bàn làm việc. Để không khí trong lành vào ra bằng cách mở rộng các cửa nếu được.

  ·   Nếu những nơi lạnh hoặc nóng quá, hệ thống thông gió bình thường (HVAC: Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning) cần phải chạy suốt thời gian làm việc.

 ·    Cần phải có đủ ánh sáng cho thợ.

2. Cần áp dụng những thói quen tốt – ngăn ngừa nguy cơ nuốt phải hoá chất

·  Mang bao tay và áo tay dài khi làm việc

·  Luôn có nhãn hiệu, đọc và làm theo đúng sự chỉ dẫn khi sử dụng hoá chất, tránh bỏ nhiều hơn sự cho phép (Nhiều không có nghĩa là tốt).

·   Cất trữ những hóa chất cẩn trọng và đúng chỗ, nhớ ghi nhãn rõ ràng và đóng nút lại nếu không sử dụng.

·   Thùng rác phải được đậy lại và thường xuyên đổ rác vì bông gòn có chất acetone và isopropyl alcohol.

·   Phải rửa tay trước và sau khi làm cho khách hoặc sau khi sử dụng hóa chất trong tiệm.

·   Không được ăn uống gần hoá chất hoặc bàn làm việc.

3. Phải sử dụng đúng loại trang bị bảo vệ cá nhân  – giảm thiểu nguy cơ da bị dính hoá chất

·  Mang áo tay dài, mang bao tay và sử dụng đúng loại. Ví dụ, bao tay nitrile thì tốt hơn latex hoặc vinyl. Bao tay nitrile bảo vệ chống lại chất độc trong hóa chất. Hơn nữa, nó giúp bạn phòng ngừa bụi acrylic dính lên tay và bàn tay.

·  Mang áo tay dài, che mặt, v.v… khi chiết hóa chất (chia ra những chai nhỏ) hoặc khi đánh bóng, giũa móng, v.v…

4. Chọn hóa chất an toàn hơn nếu được.

·   Các hoá chất sơn móng tay chân chứa dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde (chất giữ thịt, xác người, trái cây v.v… cho lâu hư), hoặc toluene nguy hiểm và độc hại hơn, hiện đang có các nước sơn móng tay an toàn hơn.

·   Đừng có dùng hoá chất quá trọng lượng hoặc quá concentrated; phải biết cách pha loãng (dilute).

5. Chọn sự lành mạnh khi về nhà.

·   Khi về nhà, thay quần áo liền và giặt quần áo đi làm riêng để phòng ngừa bụi và hóa chất ở tiệm mang về nhà hoặc lan qua quần áo khác, bạn phải nên cẩn trọng việc này.

·   Không nên ôm con trong quần áo mới đi làm về.

·   Bỏ việc thị phi, khó chịu, bực bội ở tiệm, không mang về nhà hoặc chia sẻ với những trẻ con.

            Nói tóm lại, nghề nail là nghề nuôi sống hai ba thế hệ của người Việt Nam. Một nghề tương đối dễ làm vì không cần học tiếng Anh nhiều, nếu chịu khó thì làm ra tiền rất nhanh. Nhưng thợ nail làm có tiền để làm gì, để lại cho con cho cháu, giúp đỡ những người thân bên nhà. Có thể nói họ là những người có lòng vị tha, nhân ái, biết đùm bọc và thương yêu gia đình, bà con, quê hương và giống nòi. Vì thế thợ nail cần có được sự cảm thông và nâng đỡ của cộng đồng người Việt khắp nơi. Hơn ai hết, chúng ta là người Việt Nam cần phải học hỏi điều căn bản này là: Nếu chúng ta không thể giúp bất cứ việc gì tốt hơn, thì ít nhất là không làm gì phiền lòng hay tổn thương nhau.

In recent decades, the nail salon industry has been one of the fastest growing in the U.S. California has over 300,000 workers licensed to perform nail care services. Though little is known about their health, these workers routinely handle cosmetic products containing carcinogens and endocrine disruptors that may increase a woman’s breast cancer risk. Additionally, an estimated 59–80% of California nail salons are run by Vietnamese women who face socio-cultural barriers that may compromise their workplace safety and health care access. In a pilot project designed to characterize Vietnamese nail salon workers in Alameda County, California in order to inform future health interventions and reduce occupational exposures, we conducted face-to-face surveys with a convenience sample of 201 Vietnamese nail salon workers at 74 salons. Of the workers surveyed, a majority reported that they are concerned about their health from exposure to workplace chemicals. Additionally, a sizeable proportion reported having experienced some health problem after they began working in the industry, particularly acute health problems that may be associated with solvent exposure (e.g. skin and eye irritation, breathing difficulties and headaches). Our findings highlight a critical need for further investigation into the breast cancer risk of nail salon workers, underscored by the workers’ routine use of carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, their prevalent health concerns about such chemicals, and their high level of acute health problems. Moreover, the predominance of Vietnamese immigrant women in this workforce makes it an important target group for further research and health interventions.
