Where are you/we heading?

May I send a few words?

Don’t be sad in the uncertainty,

Don’t cultivate joy with the hungry heart.

Don’t get mad with the young,

Don’t war with the familiar faces.

Good friends bring us happiness,

Bad ones give us life lessons.

Happiness and sadness are intertwined,

Celebrate and cherish all occasions.

Do not make promises when you are happy,

Do not be reactive when you are angry.

Do not make decision when you are sad,

Do not laugh when others cry or are mad.

Do not be angry or rebuke,

Life will be easier.

Where are you/we heading?

May I send a few words?

Smile at life, which is ever-changing,

And not have too much pity for life and death itself.

Review of Awaken: Buddhism, Nature, and Life--A Vision of Poems for West and East

In the world in which we live there exists as many stories, songs, thoughts, and feelings as there are stars in the night sky and possibly more. But life in this world is as fast as it is breathtaking. There are various bouquets of passionate emotions that take the form of music and art, but as I find myself listening to the radio and roaming the shelves of the library, I find myself thinking about how each of the stories, whether they are conveyed in stanzas, sung verses, or between two covers, are echoes of the same thing. The themes in today’s society are often tainted with dark clouds of fear and malice. The essence of dystopia hangs heavy in the air, so starkly different from the thirst for adventure that lingered on the tongue of my childhood. Now the everyday quest for the common person seems to be to survive the onslaught of mandatory duties and attempt find happiness in the meager scraps of their lives.

Phe Bach’s book Awaken: Buddhism, Nature, and Life--A Vision of Poems for West and East holds the essence of enjoying life’s gift of the moment, of treasuring each breath that fills our lungs. It was interesting for me, a girl raised in the Catholic faith, to read this and take in the teachings Buddhism offers. Much of the religion in my life as a child was abundant with things such as worshiping a book I could barely understand, sitting at a pew wearing a cotton dress, and the odd taste of round wafers placed on my tongue. I think along the way I lost the true meaning of religion: to teach others to love and respect those in your life. As I was searching for tools that could help me write the words on this very page, I came across one of my favorite prayers: the Prayer of Saint Francis. “O Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is discord, harmony; Where there is error, truth; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.” A time ago, religion became such an odd  concept to me. I stopped going to church, and I began to question everything I was taught. But now, in the shadow of this book full of beautiful poetry I have read, I realize it doesn’t matter to me. I shouldn’t spend my time worrying if there is a God or not, but instead helping the world become a better place and spread kindness and love whenever I can. Awaken is full of rejoice, full of honor and thankfulness to the blessings the author has received. I believe people can learn a lot from pausing, even for a moment in their everyday life, and appreciating their surroundings and everything they have to be thankful for. As Phe Bach says, “There is happiness in this impermanent world.”

While it remains true that the world we live in is flawed and imperfect, it is also beautiful. Awaken helped me truly realize this, and recognize that we as coexisting human beings must appreciate all that we have, strive to relieve others of their suffering, and attempt to plant the seeds of peace and love wherever we can. To sweep this array of scattered thoughts into a constellation of a conclusion, I will say that this book has truly opened my eyes to the wonder and beauty of this transient world in which we live.

GIỚI THIỆU - AWAKEN: Buddhism, Nature, and Life: A Vision of Poems for West and East

INTRODUCTION

Phe X. Bach is the living reflection of the Bodhisattva, in both his daily life, and in his poetry. In life, he is an unassuming man. He meets with others socially: his face eager with anticipation to interact with them, his smile encouraging to others, and his hug a warm welcome to them.

When Phe lectures or teaches, his topic is often Buddhism.  He lets others know about the basics of Buddhism, as well as the importance of leadership, and the value of a lifelong education.  Phe actively educates in his high school teaching job, as well as in his guidance of young Buddhist students, and in his lectures to adults in the community.

The poems you will discover in this book reflect the Phe I know in the world.  He bases his life on the principles of Buddhism.  He follows the example of Buddhist leaders, in his everyday experience.  He explains Buddhist principles to others, at their levels of understanding.  He writes poetry based on Buddhism, as well.  Even the proceeds of this book go toward the furtherance of Buddhist practice and education.

The poetry reflects Phe’s background in the Vietnamese culture. Many poems describe aspects of his family, and of his hometown in Vietnam. Several compare and contrast the virtues and the vices of both cultures. Phe particularly describes, with exquisite visual imagery in words, his impressions of the two cultures in which he has developed.

The poems reflect Phe’s encounters with himself within nature.  Phe lets us picture his world through his words.  We see the impermanence of floating clouds, the perfection of a dewdrop, the vision of the full moon. We see the forest, in its unsullied natural condition, and after humankind has left it less beautiful.

Phe shows us, through his poems, the worldview of the Bodhisattva: one who rejects the calm of nirvana, in order to assist other people to discover Buddhism in this world.  Phe particularly emphasizes his distaste of our societies, both East and West, as we toss garbage into our environment.  He compares that to the way in which our corporate society treats individuals as garbage, as well.  His abhorrence of this practice is evident, which goes along with his personal development of karuna, or compassion.

At the same time, Phe is not exclusive in his attitude.  To a Buddhist, he is a member of the sangha.  To a Hindu, he is a householder yogi.  To a Christian, he is a loving and compassionate individual.  To a secular humanist, he is a sensitive man.  These poems can be read by people of any religious persuasion.  Only a few poems will be incomprehensible, due to their emphasis on more advanced Buddhism.

Enjoy these poems!  They reveal in delicate, visual and tactile imagery the simple but full life of a loving and compassionate man—a man who values family, nature, community, and a desire for unity with life’s source.  By savoring these poems you, too, will appreciate your world more fully!

Bạch Xuân Phẻ, là sự phản chiếu thực tiễn của trái tim Bồ Tát, được thể hiện qua nếp sống và trong thơ văn của anh. Trong xã hội, anh là một người khiêm tốn; Anh thường gặp gỡ và giao thiệp với mọi người; tấm lòng thiết tha của anh được cùng họ chuyện trò, trao đổi; nụ cười của anh là sự khuyến tấn họ; dành cho họ sự thân thiện mật thiết khi đến với nhau…

Anh thường chọn những đề tài liên quan đến Phật Giáo để giảng dạy và hướng dẫn. Anh muốn giúp họ hiểu về nền tảng căn bản của đạo Phật, bên cạnh đó, anh còn giúp mọi người hiểu về chiều hướng lãnh đạo và giá trị của sự giáo dục.  Ngoài sự năng động trong công việc rèn luyện và giáo dục học sinh ở trường trung học có kiến thức cao rộng; anh còn hướng dẫn các đoàn sinh Gia Đình Phật Tử; và giảng dạy cho cộng đồng bên ngoài…

Những khúc thơ bạn sẽ đón đọc trong tập thơ này phản ảnh qua con người của Phẻ. Anh dựa trên nguyên lý của đạo Phật để xây dựng đời sống tâm linh và đi theo con đường của các vị tiền bối và chư vị thiện tri thức Phật giáo.  Anh luôn tận tình chú giải cho mọi người hiểu về tôn chỉ của đạo Phật tùy theo trình độ của mỗi người.  Thơ anh viết cũng dựa vào khía cạnh của Phật giáo.  Và sự lợi nhuận của tập thơ này, anh đi sâu hơn nữa, đó là chút đóng góp tịnh tài để giúp mọi người, nhất là giới trẻ bước tiến xa hơn sự huân tập và hành trì trong đạo Phật…

Lối thơ của Phẻ phản ảnh qua nguồn cội của anh.  Anh diễn đạt qua nhiều khía cạnh sống của gia đình anh và quê hương thân yêu của mình.  Anh so sánh, những tương đồng và tương phản về đạo đức con người và những suy đồi truỵ lạc của hai nền văn hóa.  Anh khéo mô tả những hình ảnh rất cụ thể và rõ rệt bằng ngôn từ trong sáng; những ấn tượng của anh về hai nền văn hóa mà anh đã khai triển…

Những khúc thơ này, như là sự hạnh ngộ của tâm hồn anh cùng với thiên nhiên. Anh vẽ cho chúng ta một bức tranh để chúng ta tự mường tượng thế giới của anh qua lời thơ anh viết, như sự vô thường của những áng mây; sự hình thành của hạt sương; sức tưởng về vầng trăng toàn bích.  Chúng ta có thể hình dung rằng núi rừng vốn dĩ thiên nhiên tạo, không một vết nhơ, và sau khi loài người đến với nó, ra đi với nó, nó lại ít đẹp hơn…

Phẻ vạch cho chúng ta thấy được thế giới của Bồ Tát qua những dòng thơ của anh đơn thuần của anh, ví như các Bồ Tát đã không chịu vào Niết Bàn để có thể len lõi trong cuộc đời cứu độ chúng sanh.  Anh chẳng lấy làm thú vị; ngược lại anh nhận thấy xã hội doanh nghiệp đương thời từ Đông sang Tây có quá nhiều ô nhiễm về môi sinh; và đã làm ảnh hưởng không nhỏ đến đời sống của con người. Từ những bằng chứng ghê sợ đó, song song với sự hành trì hạnh từ bi của anh, đã đem lại sự lợi lạc cho chính anh và cho nhân loại xung quanh anh; đó là bước chân, là hạnh nguyện của Bồ tát không chịu vào Niết bàn để cứu độ chúng sanh.

Tuy nhiên, anh đã không xa rời với thế gian pháp.  Với tín đồ Phật giáo, anh là một Phật tử thuần thành; với Ấn Độ giáo, anh là người yogi tuyệt vời; với Thiên Chúa giáo, anh là một người đầy lòng nhân ái; với thế gian, anh là một người nhạy cảm, từ bi.  Cho nên, bất kỳ ai, cũng có thể hòa đồng được với những khúc thơ anh viết. Chỉ đâu đó, vài đoản thơ, anh đưa ta vào chiều sâu của Phật giáo để ca ngợi những vị lãnh đạo Phật giáo đã công phu hành trì cứu độ chúng sanh trong thế giới này.

At dawn, everything is just about to wake up

The wind howls in the stillness of this earthy place

The ocean is forever powerful

The waves crash into the shore,

The foams are as white as the clouds.

The ocean is vast, immense and sacred

It is as deep and wide as the love of our father

It is vast and limitless as the love of our mother

Looking at the ocean, I realize how tiny we really are

We are but a small stream, flowing into the big sea

A sea of compassion, a sea of wisdom and a sea of awakening

Life is beautiful and ever-changing,
Like today's rain following yesterday's sunshine

Life is a constant change and as fragile as a drop of dew, as sea foam or as evening clouds

But we are lucky because we have all the basic conditions for happiness

From your feet, your breath, your lips to your eyes

From your brain, your heart, your mind to your healthy hands

BÀI THƠ CƯ TRẦN LẠC ĐẠO của 

Tổ Trúc Lâm Yên Tử Việt Nam (1258 – 1308)

Sáng nay, một ngày rất lạnh nhưng đẹp trời. Có nắng vàng chim hót vang ca. Trời lạnh nhưng không lạnh như ở Miền Trung và Đông Bắc Hoa Kỳ hiện nay. Nghĩ mà thương và đồng cảm với đồng loại.  Vừa nộp xong điểm học nhiệm kỳ qua, nhận được một email của Ni Sư Thuần Tuệ,

"Hi anh Tâm Thường Định,

Khi nào tiện anh dịch dùm bài thơ của Sơ Tổ Trúc Lâm :

Ở đời vui đạo hãy tùy duyên,

Đói đến thì ăn, mệt ngủ liền.

Trong nhà có báu thôi tìm kiếm

Đối cảnh vô tâm chớ hỏi thiền.

Đây cũng là một trong những nét tiêu biểu của Thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử Việt Nam.

Cám ơn anh nhiều.

Thuần Tuệ"

Là một bài thơ nổi tiếng của Tổ Trúc Lâm Yên Tử Việt Nam thì mình làm sao dám mà dịch, nhưng nghĩ đến thế hệ kế thừa không biết đọc tiếng Việt và tấm lòng thương yêu nâng đỡ của Ni sư, nên mạo muội tạm dịch ra tiếng Anh để hiểu nghĩa của Tổ vậy. Bài thơ CƯ TRẦN LẠC ĐẠO như sau:

Cư trần lạc đạo thả tùy duyên.

Cơ tắc xan hề, khốn tắc miên.

Gia trung hữu bảo hưu tầm mịch;

Đối cảnh vô tâm mạc vấn Thiền.

Theo bản dịch của ông cụ Võ Đình (Mai) và Công-Huyền Tôn-Nữ Nha-Trang thì được dịch:

Ở ĐỜI VUI ĐẠO

Ở đời vui đạo tuỳ duyên

Đói ăn mệt ngủ, tự nhiên dễ dàng

Ngọc châu nhà có sắn sàng

Đâu cần tìm kiếm ngoài đường luống công

Đối người đối vật dung thong

Tâm không vướng mắc là tông chỉ Thiền.

Rồi bằng tiếng Anh là,

TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD

In this world of dust

is enjoyment of the Way attained

by following the natural path

To eat when hungry, to sleep when weary

When at home are such treasures readily available

there is no need to hunt afar for them

Treating all and everything with a free heart

Is the essence of Zen. (Một Cành Mai, pg. 78)

Còn bản dịch của cư sỹ Nguyên Giác Phan Tấn Hải là:

Living amid dust and enjoying the way,  

you should let all things take their course.  

When hungry, just eat; when tired, just sleep.  

The treasure is in your house; don’t search any more.  

Face the scenes, and have no thoughts;  

then you don’t need to ask for Zen.

Rồi Ni Sư Thuần Tuệ bảo rằng có một bài dịch nữa, sát theo bản gốc Hán:

To enjoy the Way in worldly life, just live in harmony with what comes,

Eating when hungry, sleeping when weary.

There is treasure in our house, no need to search for it,

Dealing with all matters with no-mind mind, no need to ask about Zen.

Và nhờ "tổng hợp từ những bài dịch thành một bài sát bản dịch của Ôn Trúc Lâm".  

Vì thế, nên mới y giáo phụng hành. Xin mạn phép được dịch như sau:

In this earthly world, enjoy life as its natural way

When you are hungry, just eat; when you are weary, just sleep.

As in our house, or within us, there is already treasure

When facing countless scenes, no mind is the essence of Thiền (Zen).

Nhưng sau đó cũng chưa vừa ý lắm, nên đổi lại là

THE PEACEFUL PATH IN THIS LIFE

In this earthly world, enjoy life as its natural way

When you are hungry, just eat; when you are weary, just sleep.

As in our house and in us,

  there is no need to search for the treasure already within.

When facing countless situations, no mind is the essence of Thiền (Zen).

Và phần tiếng Việt, được dịch sau đây:

Sống đời vui đạo hãy tùy duyên

Khi đói thì ăn, mệt ngủ liền

Trong ta, nhà ở bao của quý

Muôn sự vô tâm, tông chỉ Thiền.
